Dr. Nora Volkow editorial on the Fentanyl Crisis and the need for methadone accessibility (blog)

Dr. Nora Volkow (pronounced VOHL-kuv), director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health, discusses the vital importance of methadone accessibility to address the Fentanyl Crisis. Dr. Volkow highlights how cumulative research evidence shows that methadone is crucial for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment both for overdose prevention and for recovery, with previous studies pointing out that 89-99% of people who retain treatment achieve remission. Although we see growing evidence to support this direction, attitudinal and structural barriers are still issues that prevent greater accessibility to this important medication for OUD treatment: New Blog.
